Shortly after I wrote this post about Mamello, she returned to the hospital to undergo another round of malnutrition treatment and to begin an ARV regiment.
While our hearts broke to know that this little girl would have to spend more time in the hospital, we were all thankful she was receiving the medical treatment she needed to regain her health.
Well, a few days ago Mamello returned to us at the safe-home.
I could not be happier to have her soft smile and laughter back in my life everyday.
She is the most unassuming and affectionate child.
I melt every time she comes quietly up beside me and and leans her head on my side...or places her warm little hand in mine.
Following this second round of treatment, the difference in Mamello is remarkable.
Her cheeks are chubbier.
Her tummy is not as distended.
She is much more active...she interacts with the other children...colors intently...and has developed a penchant for pushing all the buttons on my iphone and deleting important things like grocery lists.
But Mamello still has a long way to go.
Her strength is enough that she can walk from place to place...but watching her labor to stand up is heartbreaking.
Each day we see progress though...more smiles...more laughter...and that is all we can ask for.
