the fourth of july

The Fourth of July in my family is quite the extravaganza. We all head to G&G's in Coeur d'Alene.  If you're not wearing the designated t-shirt, you are not allowed to come.  First up, the parade.  We all don one of the ridiculous hats in my Grammie's crazy hat collection and take our seats on the curb outside their house.  Then it's off to the cabin for a big ol' BBQ...then back to G&G's for the firework show over the lake...all in all a long, exhausting, and wonderful day.

This 4th I was feeling particularly crafty.  I started off making a ribbon tuxedo-esque shirt.  I turned out really cute...although I was only allowed to war it in the afternoon as I had to wear the regulation shirt the rest of the day.  In the ongoing effort to improve my nascent calligraphy skills, I then put together a few calligraphy samples (I know, I know...it needs a lot of work...especially the whole writing in a straight line thing).  Perhaps my favorite project of the weekend was this fabulous flag cake, I spotted over on Make It and Love It.  While mine, obviously, didn't turn out as perfect as Brittney's, it was still quite the hit.  As a I cut it, everyone gathered around the table to see the surprise that was inside.  Of course, I had no idea if it the whole flag thing had actually worked, so I was delighted to see that the inside of the cake actually did look like a flag!  (Note: Cake making still needs a lot o' work, before the whole baking a wedding cake thing can happen!)

I topped off the day with some sugar cookies.  Even though I've made these kinds of cookies a thousand and a half times, I'm always so excited with how fun they turn out.  Some day I hope to be able to make cookies this fabulous!
