I can't believe I've lived in the Northwest for over 18 years and never done the Hiawatha Trail! We - my cousins, my brother, and I - decided on the spur of the moment to take the drive to the Idaho/Montana border and hopped on our bikes. We weren't sure how the whole thing was going to go with Daniel's massively sprained ankle in a big boot. As he jumped on his bike and wobbled through the parking lot, a bystander shouted "that boy's gonna kill himself!" Soon enough Dan had mastered the art of riding a bike with a walking cast and we were off.
The very first portion of the ride leads you straight into a pitch-black 1.7 mile long tunnel. Good thing we had flash lights duck-taped to our handlebars. The rest of the trail lead us through several more tunnels and over numerous train trestles. The entire ride was so beautiful! I'm insisting that my parents go with me to the trail next weekend!
