Lepaera, Honduras

I recently returned form my third trip to Lepaera, a small, rural town in the mountains of Honduras.

Honduras is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere, following only Haiti.

With a higher murder rate than Mexico, Honduras is rapidly becoming an integral part of the Central American drug trade.

Most Honduran children don't attend school past fifth grade.

But, to me, these are not the highlights of Honduras.

Yes, our Honduran friends point out the homes of the local drug lords - as if it weren't obvious from the armed men standing on the roof - and the cashier of nearly every store seems to be less than 10 years old.

However, juxtaposed to these things, I see fair trade coffee cooperatives that are empowering individuals to care for their family and the environment around them.

I see teachers who ride public transportation for a total of four hours each day to get to their students.

And, each year, I am welcomed by the loving arms of the Carias family.

Such a wonderful family!  So generous!

It was so sad to see our dear Marlene battling breast cancer for the second time.

Here's a picture of Carias with his boys.
